A Beginner's Guide to Choosing the Right Treadmill

23 Jun 2024

As a beginner looking to buy a treadmill, the numerous options available can be overwhelming. Different brands emphasize various features such as commercial use, home use, single-function, multi-function, and other specialized terms. Here's a breakdown to help you understand the types of treadmills available on the market, making it easier for you to choose the right one for your home.

A photograph showing three women exercising on treadmills in a gym. They are dressed in athletic attire: the woman in the center wears a gray tank top and black shorts, the woman on the left wears a green shirt and black pants, and the woman on the right wears a white tank top and dark-colored pants. They have focused expressions, seemingly engaging in rigorous cardio exercise.

Types of Treadmills by Usage

  1. Commercial Treadmills:

    • Typically used in gyms, fitness centers, or luxury hotels.
    • Designed to withstand heavy usage and meet professional fitness needs.
  2. Home Treadmills:

    • Intended for personal use at home or in small communities.
    • Suitable for individuals looking for convenience and regular exercise.
    • Modern home treadmills are increasingly sophisticated and professional.
  3. Light Commercial Treadmills:

    • A middle ground between commercial and home treadmills.
    • Often found in corporate gyms or larger residential communities.
    • Economical yet capable of meeting substantial fitness demands.

In the background, a blond-haired male dressed in a dark-colored top and light-colored pants is also running attentively. Both individuals are avoiding eye contact with the camera.

Types of Treadmills by Drive Mechanism

  1. Manual Treadmills:

    • Operate by the user’s movement, driven by the friction between the feet and the belt.
    • Less common now and being gradually phased out.
  2. Electric Treadmills:

    • The most prevalent type today.
    • Powered by an electric motor that moves the belt at various speeds and inclines.
    • Simulate outdoor running but often allow for a higher distance covered due to the elimination of the push-off phase.

Types of Treadmills by Function

  1. Single-Function Treadmills:

    • Focus solely on running or walking.
    • More affordable and suitable for basic fitness needs.
    • Can be further divided into roller-type and flat-belt treadmills.
    • Roller-type treadmills are noisy and less effective, gradually becoming obsolete.
    • Flat-belt treadmills provide a more realistic running experience.
  2. Multi-Function Treadmills:

    • Offer additional features beyond running, such as rowing machines, stationary bikes, relaxation devices, and twisting plates.
    • Popular for their versatility and space-saving designs.

When choosing a treadmill, it’s essential to consider what functions you need. If you only plan to run, a basic treadmill will suffice and be more cost-effective. However, if you’re looking for a more versatile workout machine, a multi-function treadmill might be the better choice.
