Get Ready for Summer: The Easy and Effective Fat-Burning Power of Incline Walking

20 Jun 2024

Summer is approaching, and many of us are starting to worry about the extra pounds gained during the winter. The usual thoughts of weight loss often lead to running, jumping rope, or hitting the gym—activities that can be exhausting and hard to maintain. Is there a less tiring, effective, and easy-to-stick-with exercise? The answer is incline walking!

This image depicts two individuals using treadmills in a gym. In the foreground, one person can be seen walking on a treadmill wearing gray pants and green sneakers. In the background, another individual wearing orange shoes is also walking on a treadmill. Both individuals are dressed in athletic wear, indicating they are performing aerobic exercise.

1. The Impressive Fat-Burning Benefits of Incline Walking

You might be skeptical, but incline walking truly is an effective fat burner! Studies show that walking at an incline on a treadmill can burn more fat than regular running. For example, setting the treadmill incline to over 10 degrees and walking for 30 minutes can burn as many calories as running, if not more. Plus, you won’t be gasping for breath—just a brisk walk is all it takes.

2. Multiple Benefits of Incline Walking

Besides its fat-burning prowess, incline walking offers several other advantages:

  • Knee-Friendly: Unlike high-impact exercises like running and jumping rope, incline walking is much gentler on the knees, making it ideal for those with joint issues.
  • Beginner-Friendly: Even if you have no fitness background, incline walking is easy to start. Simply adjust the treadmill’s incline and speed to find your pace.
  • Highly Flexible: You can easily adjust the incline and speed based on your fitness level, making it suitable for both main workouts and warm-ups.

3. How to Start Incline Walking

Starting incline walking is simple. Here are some tips:

  • Begin with a Low Incline: Beginners should start with an incline of less than 5 degrees to get a feel for the exercise, then gradually increase the incline and speed.
  • Maintain Proper Posture: Keep your body neutral, avoid leaning forward or holding onto the treadmill, and use your thighs and glutes for power, not your calves.
  • Monitor Your Heart Rate: Use a heart rate monitor to ensure your heart rate stays in the optimal fat-burning zone, allowing for effective fat loss without excessive fatigue.

4. Real-Life Experience

In practice, a volunteer named Afar did a 30-minute incline walking test. At a 12-degree incline and 4.8 km/h speed, Afar burned 176 calories. Comparatively, running for 30 minutes or jumping rope for 20 minutes burns a similar amount, but incline walking felt much easier and more sustainable. Afar reported feeling only mildly out of breath without sweating excessively and plans to incorporate incline walking while watching TV, combining entertainment with fat loss.

5. Important Considerations

While incline walking has many benefits, there are a few considerations:

  • Chronic Conditions: Those with chronic cardiovascular diseases or knee pain should consult a doctor before starting.
  • Gradual Progression: Avoid starting with a high incline and fast speed. Gradually adapt to prevent injuries.
  • Proper Warm-Up and Cool-Down: Always warm up before and cool down after your workout to prevent muscle strains.
